Acquiring recursive structures through distributional learning

چکیده
Languages differ regarding the depth, structure, and syntactic domains of recursive structures. Even within a single language, some structures allow infinite self-embedding while others are more restricted. For example, when expressing ownership relation, English allows embedding prenominal genitive -s, whereas postnominal is much How do speakers learn which specific not? The distributional learning proposal suggests that recursion structure (e.g., X1’s-X2) licensed if X1 position X2 productively substitutable in non-recursive input. present study tests this with an artificial language experiment. We exposed adult participants to X1-ka-X2 strings. In productive condition, almost all words attested were also position; unproductive only were. found that, as predicted, from condition likely accept unattested strings at both one- two-embedding levels than condition. Our results suggest can use information one-embedding level whether or not recursive.

Acquiring Recursive Concepts with Explanation-Based Learning
Explanation-based generalization algorithms need to generalize the structure of their explanations. This is necessary in order to acquire concepts where a recursive or iterative process is implicitly represented in the explanation by a fixed number of applications. The fully-implemented BAGGER2 system generalizes explanation structures and produces recursive concepts when warranted. Otherwise t...
متن کاملAcquiring an Italian Polarity Lexicon through Distributional Methods
Recent interests in Sentiment Analysis brought the attention on effective methods to detect opinions and sentiments in texts. Many approaches in literature are based on resources, such as Polarity Lexicons, which model the prior polarity of words or multi-word expressions. Developing such resources is expensive, language dependent, and linguistic sentiment phenomena are not fully covered in the...
متن کاملAutomatically Acquiring Phrase Structure Using Distributional Analysis
In this paper, we present evidence that the acquisition of the phrase structure of a natural language is possible without supervision and with a very small initial grammar. We describe a language learner that extracts distributional information from a corpus annotated with parts of speech and is able to use this extracted information to accurately parse short sentences. The phrase structure lea...
متن کاملLearning Recursive HTN-Method Structures for planning
HTN planning is one of the most effective planning methods in AI. However, designing the HTN-decomposition methods is a very difficult task which has been achieved mainly by humans. It would therefore be desirable to design automated learning methods to acquire these decomposition methods from observed action sequences. In this work, we explore how to apply model-based clustering in order to co...
متن کاملAcquiring and processing verb argument structure: distributional learning in a miniature language.
Adult knowledge of a language involves correctly balancing lexically-based and more language-general patterns. For example, verb argument structures may sometimes readily generalize to new verbs, yet with particular verbs may resist generalization. From the perspective of acquisition, this creates significant learnability problems, with some researchers claiming a crucial role for verb semantic...
